How much does a Security Guard make in Ontario?
In Ontario the average hourly wage for a security guard ranges from $14.00 per hour to just under $27.00 per hour. The amount paid will depend on specific duties, experience and the organization that you are working for. These numbers are based on 2014 data and could be higher. How do I get my security guard license in Ontario?
The process for getting your licence is governed by the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and its Regulations.
To get your license the following applies:
a) You Must Be Eligible (Which Means):
- You must be 18 years of age or older.
- You must be eligible to work in Canada.
- You must have a clean criminal record. (The list of criminal offences that you must not have been convicted of, or have not received a pardon for can be found in Ont. Reg. 37/08: Eligibility To Hold A License - Clean Criminal Record
b) You must complete the basic training by taking the 40 Hour Security Guard course. This course is prescribed by the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and includes Emergency Level First Aid Certification. If you already have Emergency First Aid Certification from an approved organization you do not have to take it again. Securityguardtrainingontario.com provides the online version of the course with WPSL Security Solutions, who is the training provider. Once you have completed the course WPSL Security Solutions will obtain your training number from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
c) You must pass the Security Guard examination. Security Guard examinations are scheduled through Serco, the testing organization for security guards and private investigators by visiting the Security Guard and Private Investigator Testing site. Testing takes place at Ontario Driver’s Licensing Centres throughout Ontario.
Can I take the security guard course online?
Yes you can take the Ontario Security Guard Course online. The online version of the course covers the same material as the in class course. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Service's website has the details of the Security Guard Training Syllabus.
The advantages of the online version is that it can be completed at your own pace in the comfort of your own home. Online versions of the course usually cost less as they have less overhead than the in-class versions of the course. Additionally, if you have already completed your first aid certification you do not have to pay for it again. With the online version of the course you still get access to experienced law enforcement professionals who you can communicate with to get answers to your questions.
If I am taking the course on-line, can I get my First Aid online too?
The Canadian Red Cross currently provides a blended format for Emergency First Aid. This program is delivered in two parts, the first being online. The second is in class and provides an opportunity to complete the physical skills portion of the program. Using the Red Cross link below do a normal search and you will see a blended delivery format for those providers who deliver this type of training. Securityguardtrainingontario.com has partnered with a number of these providers and has obtained special pricing of $75.22 (plus HST) per person for individuals completing their training with us. The areas of York Region, Durham Region, and Kitchener Waterloo are currently covered. We are adding additional partners are being added regularly.
As per the Private Security and Investigative Services Act Regulations, First Aid training must be provided by a St. John Ambulance or WSIB certified instructor. First Aid Requirements
You can search online for qualified organizations providing first aid training in your area. Please ensure that the organization you use meets the requirements of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act.
